Patriarchate of Peć
The seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church is established in Kosovo, spiritual heart of the kingdom.
Republic of Kosovo
Independent since 2008 and recognised by a majority of member states, Kosovo is Europe's youngest territory both in population and in statehood.
The monasteries of Dečani, Peć and Gračanica are among the summits of medieval Byzantine art and are World Heritage listed. The patriarchate of Peć was the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church: the memory of these places is here both shared and contested.
The heart of medieval Serbia, where the patriarchate of Peć stands, Kosovo became Ottoman after 1389 and saw its population shift towards an Albanian and Muslim majority.
Attached to Serbia in 1912, it obtained broad autonomy in Tito's Yugoslavia, abolished in 1989. The conflict of 1998-1999 ended with NATO's intervention and the placing of the territory under UN administration.
Independence was declared on 17 February 2008. It is recognised by a large majority of Union member states — five have not done so — but not by Serbia or Russia. The normalisation dialogue led by Brussels since 2011 conditions the European future of both parties.
