How this ranking is built

The population shown is the sum of the populations of the countries where the language holds official state status. It is recomputed from the country records, never typed in by hand. A language that is only regional therefore has no total and sits at the end of the list: counting a whole country’s population for a language spoken in one of its regions would give a false figure.

The site interface is translated and reviewed in five languages only — those that carry their own address. The other languages in the register serve to read contributions: they create no extra address.
